Tri Cities forecast is snow…Are you ready?

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

The temperatures have been in the teens for the past few days.  This morning it was 16 degrees, but I didn’t have to scrape any ice of my vehicle so the air seems to be fairly dry.  However…..forecasters are saying there’s a likelihood of snow accumulation in the valleys of Eastern Washington.

Two years ago, I came home from a long day at work to find my driveway running with water and a sheet of ice beneath.  As I clicked the garage door opener and watched the door rise, there was a cascade of water falling down across the white and blue checkerboard pattern, glistening in the light of the motion detectors.   A pipe, in the attic over the garage (un-insulated) burst when the temperatures were below freezing for several days.  With the low temps we experiencing here in the Tri Cities, I am making sure I am winter ready this year!   Are you?

Here are a few tips to stay safe and warm during snow and icy conditions.

Let’s start with the most obvious…..Prevent Freezing Pipes!  Insulate your homes pipes with proper insulation or even newspapers and plastic and allow your faucets to drip a little during cold weather to prevent them from freezing. Even at a trickle of running water helps prevent frozen pipes.

Be sure you know where your water shut off valve is located.

Avoid drafts and save on heating costs with a check of windows and doors.   How is the caulking and weather-stripping?  Does it need to be replaced?  Installing storm windows or cover your windows with plastic to keep heat in.

Clean out rain gutters, repair leaky roofs and cut away tree branches that could fall on your house or outdoor buildings during a wind storm.

Be Safe: Avoid any fuel-burning equipment indoors.  Any fuel burning equipment should be vented to the outside.   If you are burning any fuel source, please keep a fire extinguisher close by.  A house fire can be devastating.

When driving, practice safety for you and your passengers.  Allow additional driving time so you are not rushing.

Take it easy.  Slow your speed, braking and acceleration during your travels.  Don’t use the cruise control.

Don’t Tailgate.  The last thing you need to do is step on the brakes in the ice.

Keep a blanket and some protein bars in the vehicle in the event of an emergency.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY JANUARY!

The Beautiful Rivers of the Tri-Cities…

The Beautiful Rivers of the Tri-Cities…

Our rivers are such an important part of make up of the Tri-Cities. “The Mighty Columbia” flows from Canada into the Pacific Northwest and is the largest river in volume flowing into the Pacific Ocean. I believe it is just behind the Mississippi River in volume. The river is named after Captain Robert Gray’s ship the Columbia Rediviva, the first ship to journey up the river.
The Columbia with all of its dams is the largest hydroelectric power-producing river. The Snake River flows into the Columbia in between Pasco and Burbank. It flows for more than 1,000 miles in the western part of the U.S., from Yellowstone National Park, through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington and ending here in the Tri-Cities. It is the largest tributary to the Columbia. The Yakima River named after the Yakima indigenous people, is another tributary emptying into the Columbia River near Richland with headwaters in Keechelus Lake. Come visit our beautiful Tri-Cities, with its unusual combination of vast rivers and arid desert land. There is so much to offer outdoor enthusiasts here and the weather is warm, sunny and incredible.

Tips to Make Your Home More Appealing to Buyers

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Most buyers are influenced by first impressions, which of course is your home’s exterior.  Repair or replace those items that can use an update:  shutters, shingles, screens.  Paint is always a good way to freshen up the exterior.  Pressure washing vinyl siding takes off years.  Stay tuned for more tips.  In the meantime, take a look at Distinctive Properties’ latest weekly statistics by clicking on this link.

“Northwest Ride of Dreams to benefit Special Olympics

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Kennewick Police officers will be looking for motorcycle riders in August — but for a good time and to benefit the Special Olympics here in the Tri-Cities. Kennewick offiicers and officers from all over the state have set August 28th for the “Northwest Ride of Dreams”, which will feature 5 starting locations across the state with Rotary Park in Ellensburg the final meeting destination. Vendors, events, activities and entertainment will be available for riders when they gather in the park.

This ride is patterned after other events in other states but will be a first in Washington. Law enforcement officers across the state and nationally sponsor different events to raise funds for Special Olympics. The funds raised assist families of Special Olympians to attend events where their loved one’s participate. It is the goal of the organizers to attract 10,000 cyclists and cars in Ellensburg. A $30 ticket price could potentially raise $300,000 for Special Olympics, which would be a wonderful donation to make.

Registration for the event can be completed at www.nwrideofdreams.org .  Additionally, if you don’t have a bike but have a classic car you’re also invited. There will be a show and shine at Rotary Park as well that day.   The Tri-Cities location for riders departing to Ellensburg will be at Full Throttle Motorcycle Accessories at 135 Vista Way in Kennewick. Registrations for the ride will also be taken there from 7am to 9am. This should be a wonderful ride for everyone and in the process, a wonderful opportunity to give to other folks who will appreciate your generosity!

Remembering our Fallen Heroes

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Over the course of this past weekend, several families from the Pacific Northwest gathered in private meetings and public ceremonies to honor the sons, daughters, husbands, fathers and friends they have lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A beautiful nighttime candlelight vigil was held in Columbia Park in Kennewick on Saturday evening after a day of private workshops for the families of the fallen. And on a beautifully sunny Sunday at Flat Top Park in West Richland, they gathered again – this time with hundreds of citizens who came to be a part of the remembrance.  Our state governor and other dignitaries spoke of the sacrifices made by these families.

Former Richland resident and 4-star general of the United States Marine Corps, James N. Mattis, spoke to the families and assembled group.  Mattis himself led the invasion into Baghdad and has spent plenty of time with boots on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Tri-Cities is very supportive of our men and women in uniform and for this annual memorial for those who gave all in the name of our freedom.
